According to the Equality and Human Rights Organisation, the gender pay gap is the difference in average pay between the men and women in your workforce. It is different to equal pay, which means you must pay men and women the same for equal or similar work.

It has been reported that as a result of the pandemic, the gender pay gap has now grown by a further 36 years, meaning it will take around 135 years for the gap to close. This is the biggest the gap has been for over 10 years. This is unsurprising news, given the effect the pandemic has had on working women. Now more than ever it is important for businesses to be transparent with addressing their employees' pay and be held accountable if the numbers are more favourable towards men.

Many men are now asking, how can I help bridge the gap?

  1. Be an ally and start the conversations within your organisation or workplace.

  2. Stop interrupting and listen. According to Advisory, men interrupt 33 per cent more often when speaking with a woman, compared to when speaking with other men.

  3. Show respect to the women around you – inside the workplace and out. Listen, engage and absorb their stories.
