Creating a safe space at work

In an ever-changing time and evolving landscape, it is more important than ever to establish safe spaces at work. A safe space is a created environment that encourages freedom of thought and discussion – mostly centralising around politics, religion, race, sexuality and gender – to name but a few, but can also be a space where individuals can share their experiences of the office environment. This environment can be made up of a singular person or a group – the only rule being no judgement, bias or prejudice allowed and the discussions stay within the group.

Many safe spaces have failed due to departments reiterating the information back to HR or senior management – thus making the space unsafe and unaccommodating.

So, how do we create these safe spaces?

1. Encourage an open conversation – by not having barriers in place, the conversation will flow more naturally. Don’t try and control the direction as this will cause tension.

2. Listen and don’t question – there are no right or wrong answers. By sitting and listening and absorbing what is being said, the individual will feel they are being heard.
