Can we achieve self-care in the workplace?

What the research says & how to help

Possibly one of the most over used phrases the last decade, ‘self-care’ has been used to describe anything from humble acts of self love to expensive skin care routines and bubble baths.

While you can use self-care to justify almost anything, we think it’s real meaning is giving you a chance to take a step back and ask yourself, ‘What can I do right now to protect my energy and honour my needs?’.

So how can we apply this philosophy in the workplace? For you that might mean keeping up with your skin care routine on your lunch break, or it might mean applying some of our handy tips that will help you to avoid burnout and look after your emotions and needs

Below is Hustle Crew’s self-care in the workplace toolkit, we hope it helps!

Be honest about your workload with yourself and your colleagues.

Often when we will feel under strain or our workload is too high, our instincts can tell us to hide and put our head in the sand. However this can lead to more build up of stress without others knowing that you need support. There is power in vulnerability. If you’re already working at capacity, be willing to communicate that any help you offer team mates will have to wait until your top priority work is done.

Ask yourself how your workplace makes you feel as a whole.

Is it somewhere you enjoying being? How does your team make you feel? This is a big one, but we at Hustle Crew believe that we should all feel empowered and valued in our line of work. If we are enjoying high levels of psychological safety in our team, it will be easier for us to speak up when we are stressed and need more support from our peers. If this isn’t the case, maybe its time to think about an exit plan that aligns with your budget and goals.

Know your breaking point, and don’t go there!

Ideally, start putting your boundaries up so you can preserve your energy and never reach breaking point or burnout. When you feel yourself getting frazzled, take a step back sooner than you think. Taking holiday also helps set a good example for other hard working employees. This leads on to asking yourself: do I have the right daily habits in place to help me build up and conserve my energy?

Are you only pouring when your cup is full?

Make sure your attending your own needs first before attending to others - this means at work and in your personal life! Especially if you’re a woman, as we tend to put the needs and feelings of others above our own, a behaviour we are socialised into within patriarchy. Be mindful and don’t feel guilty for saying no to protect your energy and time.
