DEI Partnership with Resident Advisor

Background

After reaching out to the team at Hustle Crew in 2020, the online music magazine and community platform Resident Advisor was committed to furthering its D&I mission - particularly by supplying its workforce with the tools and resources they need to cultivate a work environment that truly embraces diversity.

Workshop Style

The program's main objective was to broaden the team's skill-set and general approach to their fellow teammates, clients, and processes. In light of this recommendation, the team took part in a program comprised of three phases.

Phase One, Understanding Bias, focused on reviewing research from the Harvard Business Study, understanding intersectionality and privilege, and discussing unconscious bias and discrimination frameworks.

Phase Two, Fostering Inclusion, took the group through strategic reflections on one's preference, privilege, and identity. In the final phase, an accountability workshop was offered to encourage conversations about tools and resources gained such as interactive activities that involved identity inventory and reflecting on the circle of socialization.

The program was designed to create a safe environment for employees and management to openly speak with one another and equip themselves with a better understanding when making inclusive decisions. The programme focused on measuring the effectiveness, success, and accountability of D&I within the company.

In response to the training, the team set out an objective of implementing a new policy:

A company audit will be carried out twice a year to ensure transparency around the gender pay gap, recruitment and company culture. A KPI was set that all results will be published internally so everyone can see if there are any discrepancies between men and women at their level or below them.

This information gained will be used as a tool for future recruitment strategies to ensure equal representation across genders at every level of seniority.

Outcome

“Hustle Crew has been great to work with and does a great job of understanding our industry. The workshops have been great, a place for all company levels to learn from one another, learn from experiences, and examine the way we conduct ourselves in and out of the workplace.”

The program was discussion-led, reinforcing the learning and ensuring that no one gets left behind. Feedback from the entire program was overwhelmingly positive with the management's ongoing support for their employees, with each employee receiving an annual Hustle Crew membership. Mike Zinkiewich, Head of People & Culture, states.
