Recession and the workplace: Our predictions
We’re kicking off the year with some light reading: our prediction on the looming recession.
OK, while it’s not a light subject, it’s important for us to start preparing for this reality so we can keep our attention focused on our ambitions and our goals.
Recessions may feel unsettling, but they don’t have to be. Here are 3 of our predictions for leaders, managers and employees for staying on course.
1: Companies will continue with their layoffs, salary freezes and other cost-saving exercises… and it will hit underrepresented groups first.
It’s well documented, even as recently as in the case against Twitter where 57% of women were laid off vs. 47% of men, that underrepresented groups get the short end of the stick when companies fall on hard times.
2: Therefore, for employees, thinking outside the box about your income is paramount
Our founder Abadesi has been featured in publications like Bloomberg for YEARS, advocating for the life-changing magic of side-hustles, and it still rings true. First of all, identify the kind of lifestyle you want to live and how long you want to work (video below), find a passion and start building around that.
This is why for Session 2 of Layoffs to Lemonade, we’re focusing on activating your creator mode. Grow your personal brand online and offline and turn that into a fresh new stream of income. Sign up below.
3: For managers, being able to make effective decisions under pressure will be a GAME—CHANGER… but how they do that might come as a surprise
It may be tempting to restrict spending on Diversity & Inclusion in trying times, but reports from MIT confirm what the experts have been saying for YEARS — a more diverse team makes better decisions and therefore performs better overall as a business.
To survive the economic storm you need to retain your best talent. Companies simply can’t afford to let unconscious bias (which we all have and can learn to manage) or a non-inclusive workplace get in the way. It’s survival of the fittest right now and the fittest teams don’t all look the same.
